In 1873 the villageous incorporated as the Village of 2 CONT Watford, but a little south of this site. 1 NOTE In 1879 William writes in his diary about the details involved in building the 2 CONT milk-house, cutting the trees, drawing the logs and the people who worked on 2 CONT the project with him. In the milk-house, which was a small building, the milk 2 CONT was placed in large shallow pans and left on shelves for the cream to rise to 2 CONT the top and later be skimmed off. 1 NOTE William is listed as living at lot 14 con. 4/SER in 1851. William is also 2 CONT listed in the Warwick Township Heads of Households in 1867 (May 20, 1867) as 2 CONT living at lot 14, con. 4 SER at the age of 33. 1 NOTE Here is the Obituary of William Smith as transcribed from The Guide-Advocate, 2 CONT Watford, January 17, 1913----- 1 NOTE The late William Smith of Warwick whose death occured January 3rd, 1913, and 2 CONT whose parents emigrated from Dumphrieshire, Scotland, in the year 1832, and 2 CONT settled on Long Island, N. J., was born there April 14th 1833, and when a boy 2 CONT of nine years came to Canada with his parents who settled on lot 14, in the 4th 2 CONT concession of Warwick in 1842, where he resided with the exception of five 2 CONT years when he resided in Detroit, Mich. Mr. Smith was the eldest of a family 2 CONT of three, Mrs Harrower of Strathclair, Manitoba, who survives him, and the late 2 CONT Mrs. Rae, of Thedford. When living in Detroit, he was united in marriage by 2 CONT Rev. Dr. Milligan, now of Toronto, Ont., to Mary E. Sayles of that city, who 2 CONT predeceased Mr. Smith on December 24th, 1884. There was born of this union, 2 CONT two sons, William A. on the homestead, and Allan K. of Imperial, Sask.; Mrs. W. 2 CONT J. Howden of Warwick, Mrs. Geo Gardiner of Bangor, Pa., Mrs. George Vance, 2 CONT Springfield, Ohio, Mrs. George Meikle, Kelowna, B.C., and Mrs Robert Hume of 2 CONT Arkona. As will be seen, Mr. Smith was of the early pioneers of Warwick, and 2 CONT while with the family, were hewing out the home in the primeval forest, for 2 CONT Warwick at that time was a dense wilderness, encountered all the hardships and 2 CONT privations incidental to pioneer life, which he travely overcame as worthily 2 CONT befits one of a race that is fast passing. Being of a social disposition it 2 CONT was a pleasure to hear him relate the many incidents of interest that had come 2 CONT under his own observation during his long and eventful residence in the land of 2 CONT his adoption, his fireside was cheery and his hospitality was extended to 2 CONT friend and stranger alike, and neither ever found the latch string pulled in. 2 CONT He was a close student of current events and took a deep interest in the moral 2 CONT and social conditions of the community in which he lived. Being a great reader 2 CONT he possessed a fund of useful information excelled by few, and was accepted as 2 CONT authority on all matters relating to the early history of this county. It was 2 CONT his wish, expressed many times to the writer of this sketch, that some one 2 CONT should write the history of the early days in Warwick, and when told that none 2 CONT were better able to do it than himself, would reply that such a work would be 2 CONT beyond his ability. Mr. Smith could recollect when there was not a mile of 2 CONT railway on this continent, and the fastest means of travel on land was the mail 2 CONT coach making its ten miles an hour. Thousands of inventions from the lightning 2 CONT express, the ocean greyhound, and the wireless telegraphy, down to the self 2 CONT binder, the telephone, the bicycle, and the automobile, have come into 2 CONT existence during his lifetime. He could claim the distinction of having lived 2 CONT under four reigning crowned heads, viz: George III, Queen Victoria, King 2 CONT Edward, and the present King George, the Sovereign of the Empire. In politics 2 CONT he was a lifelong Liberal, and while never aspiring to office it was his 2 CONT pleasure to be intimately acquainted with many of the leaders on all shades of 2 CONT political opinion, the late Hon. Alexander MacKenzie being a warm personal 2 CONT friend. In religion he was a Presbyterian, having along with his worthy 2 CONT partner, the late Mrs. Smith, united with that body when living in Detroit, 2 CONT under the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. Milligan, and when he returned to Canada, 2 CONT affiliated with the Watford church, of which he remained a consitent supporter 2 CONT until his death, and was always found in his place at all the services of the 2 CONT church, and while he was loyal to his own church, he was not insensible to his 2 CONT duty towards his brotherman in other denominations. It was his privilege to 2 CONT enjoy the friendship of that pioneer Methodist, Uncle Joe Little, of whom he 2 CONT never wearied of speaking in terms of highest admiration of that grand old 2 CONT worthy whose name is cherished in every household where known. The funeral 2 CONT which took place to the Watford cemetary, was largely attended by friends and 2 CONT neighbors, the services been conducted by Rev. J.C. Forster, pastor of the 2 CONT church, assisted by Rev. R. Stevenson of the Congregational Church. The pall 2 CONT bearers were five cousins and son-in-law respectively, William H., John W. and 2 CONT Peter KIngston, William McLean, Davis Hamilton, and Robert Hume. The following 2 CONT lines express his last wish: 1 NOTE Safely, safely gathered in, 1 NOTE Free from sorrow, free from sin, 1 NOTE Passed beyond all grief and pain, 1 NOTE Death for thee is truest gain. 1 NOTE God Himself the soul will keep, 1 NOTE Giving His beloved sleep. 1 NOTE ----Com. 1 NOTE !NOTE: Helen Marguerite Smith Letter; ; in possession of Robert Steven Smith; ; 2 CONT , NS026893 1 NOTE Source Media Type: Letter 1 NOTE !BIRTH: Watford Cemetary; ; Hwy 79 north of Watford, Lambton, Ontario; ; , 2 CONT NS037993 1 NOTE Source Media Type: Tombstone 1 NOTE !DEATH: Watford Cemetary; ; Hwy 79 north of Watford, Lambton, Ontario; ; , 2 CONT NS037993 1 NOTE Source Media Type: Tombstone 1 NOTE !MARRIAGE:Helen Marguerite Smith Letter; ; in possession of Robert Steven 2 CONT Smith; ; , NS026893 1 NOTE Source Media Type: Letter. according to letter from Marguerite Smith---NOT SURE 2 CONT ABOUT YEAR. 0 @I22@ INDI 1 NAME Mary Elizabeth /Sayles/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 MAR 1841 2 PLAC Parishville,New York,USA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 24 DEC 1884 2 PLAC Lot 14,Con 4,SER,Warwick, Lambton, Ontario, CAN 1 BURI 2 DATE DEC 1884 2 PLAC Buried /Watford Cemetary,Watford,Ontario 1 REFN 22 1 FAMS @F19@ 1 FAMC @F24@ 1 OCCU 2 PLAC Farm Wife 1 RESI 2 PLAC Lot 14,Con. 4 SER,Warwick Tswp 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Ethnicity/Relig. 2 PLAC Presbyterian 1 NOTE Mary Elizabeth Sayles family were direct descendents of Roger Williams, 2 CONT humanitarian and founder of Rhode Island. 1 NOTE Mary Elizabeth developed pneumonia in the winter of 1884. Something like 43 years elapsed between his first 1 NOTE election to the Township Council and his final service as county comminsioner. 1 NOTE He served six terms as warden of Lambton, an all time record for the county, 1 NOTE and a quarter century lay between his first and last election to that office. 1 NOTE Rae was born in Lesmahagow, a Lanarkshire village, on November 16, 1826, 1 NOTE the son of Robert and Agnes (Hamilton) Rae, and the second of their four 1 NOTE children. When five years old and four months old, he emigrated with h 1 NOTE parents to Canada. After a tedious seven weeks' voyage, during which the 1 NOTE sailing ship "Nailor" ran the gauntlet of severe storms and lay four days in a 1 NOTE vast ice field, they reached Quebec. 1 NOTE They continued by the steamer "Chambly" to Montreal, thence by Durham boat 1 NOTE up the St. Lawrence to Prescott; thence on the steamer "William the Fourth" to 1 NOTE York--the trip from Quebec to what is now Toronto consuming three weeks. After 1 NOTE a brief sojourn with a hospitable friend, Mrs. Alexander Gibb, the family went 2 CONT on 1 NOTE to visit an uncle, Robert Hamilton, in Scarborough Township. 1 NOTE Hamilton was engaged in clearing a fallow, and the elder Robert Rae volunteered 1 NOTE to assist. The first large tree he undertook to cut fell in the wrong 2 CONT direction, and 1 NOTE the heavy trunk crushed him to death. This was on June 28, 1832, just four 1 NOTE weeks after his landing in Toronto. 1 NOTE For a few months, the widow and four small children made their home in a cabin 1 NOTE on the Hamilton farm. That fall, they rented 15 acres on the Kingston road. 2 CONT In 1 NOTE eight years there they saved enough money to purchase a 30- acre property 1 NOTE near the present site of Malvern. All this meant hard work for the younger 2 CONT Robert Rae, work which cut him off from all opportunity of securing an 2 CONT education. 1 NOTE At 16, the boy was unable to write his name, and had no knowledge of 1 NOTE arithmetic or grammar; but at the age of seven, he had completely mastered the 1 NOTE Shorter Catechism, and by attending Sabbath School and Bible Class, he 1 NOTE became well grounded in scriptural subjects. 1 NOTE In 1840 when Robert was 14, the family had moved to a 30-acre bush farm east 1 NOTE of the Markham road, where his hard work helped to make it highly productive. 1 NOTE From 16 to 19, he was able to attend for six weeks each winter, and so rapid 1 NOTE was his progress, he commences the study of the classics with a view to 1 NOTE entering a profession. Here, too, he made good headway; but at the end of a 1 NOTE year the ambition veered toward mercantile pursuits, though it was several 2 CONT years 1 NOTE before he had a chance to gratify them. 1 NOTE At 24, he became a clerk in the Strachan & Redford grocery in Toronto. The 1 NOTE following spring he opened a small store on the Markham road. 1 NOTE Meanwhile the mother had sold the 30-acre farm and the family had bought 200 1 NOTE acres in Bosanquet, then largely a wilderness. The young storekeeper sold 1 NOTE his business and in January, 1852, after a five days' journey by team, the 2 CONT family 1 NOTE reached their location on Lot 23, Con. 9, Bosanquet, where in the course of the 1 NOTE winter, they erected a log shanty. Robert and his brother, Archibald, spent 2 CONT two 1 NOTE years clearing the farm. Later they sold this and bought land near the 2 CONT thriving 1 NOTE Village of Pine Hill. The village, about that time, was rechristened Widder, 2 CONT in 1 NOTE honor of Frederick Widder, head of the Canada Company. 1 NOTE In 1854, Rae, in partnership with James Harrower, opened the second general 1 NOTE store at Widder. The following year he married Rachel Jane Smith, of Warwick. 1 NOTE Later he sold his interest in the partnership to Murdo McLeay, of Warwick, and 1 NOTE opened a general store in his own acoount. 1 NOTE In 1856, Rae was elected to the Bosanquet Township Council, an office he held 1 NOTE four years. In 1860, he was elected reeved, a position he continued to hold-- 1 NOTE except for one year--up to 1887. In 1863, he was unanimously elected warden 1 NOTE of Lambton, and re-elected for 1864 and 1867. 1 NOTE When , on March 6, 1867, a Liberal convention was called in Sarnia to nominate 1 NOTE a candidate for the new Dominion Parliament, an infomal ballot was taken on 1 NOTE possible candidates for the Legislature. T.B. Pardee received 32 votes, with 2 CONT 22 1 NOTE for Rae and 12 for Fred Davis. The same evening, however, a representative 1 NOTE gathering of the Reform Party at the Belchamber Hotel tendered the provincial 1 NOTE to Robert Rae. 1 NOTE Rae hesitated, as he had been supporting Colonel Davis. The meeting 1 NOTE thereupon, refusing to delay the matter, nominated Pardee. Rae decided to 1 NOTE contest the election as an independent. A little later, he accepted a 2 CONT nomination 1 NOTE tendered him at a Conservative convention at Wyoming. 1 NOTE He had previously been a strong Reformer, and the acceptance of the 1 NOTE Conservative nomination place him in an quivocal position. Feeling in both 1 NOTE parties was strong against men who changed their political affiliation. As a 1 NOTE result, Rae failed to secure strong support from either party, and T.B. Pardee 1 NOTE went on to a distinguished career in provincial politics. 1 NOTE This fiasco, however, did not shake Lambton's confidence in Rae as a 1 NOTE municipal leader. Bosanquet contiuned to elect him reeve and Lambton 1 NOTE County Council re-elected him warden for 1868 and 1869. 1 NOTE Rae, meanwhile, had transferred his business interests from Widder Village to 1 NOTE Widder Station, on the Grand Trunk. Widder Station later became the Village 1 NOTE of Thedford. In 1876, Rae left Thedford to open partnership with Alfred Lofft, 2 CONT of 1 NOTE St. Marys. That year was the one break in his service as reeve. In 1877, 2 CONT while 1 NOTE he was still living in Forest, Bosanquet unanimously elected him reeve, and he 1 NOTE returned to Thedford later the same year. 1 NOTE He continued to serve till 1887, when he was elected warden of Lambton for the 1 NOTE sixth time. He then retired from the post he had held so long. In 1892, 2 CONT however, 1 NOTE he went back to the County Council as reeve of Thedford, and in 1897, when the 1 NOTE County Councils Act established a new system of county commisioners, the 1 NOTE veteran was elected to represent District 6 for a two-year term. Owing to ill 1 NOTE health, he did not offer for re-election in 1900. 1 NOTE These were not all his municipal interests. For many years he was scho 1 NOTE trustee of S.S. 11, Bosanquet, and secretary-treasurer. Only July 17, 1856, 1 NOTE he was appointed postmaster at Widder, and following his removal to Widder 1 NOTE Station ( later Thedford), he was named postmaster there in 1862. Prior to 1 NOTE Confederation, the Macdonald Government named him a justice of the peace, 1 NOTE and in his time he was one of the oldest magistrates in Ontario. In his later 1 NOTE years, following his retirement from the County Council, he was a member of 1 NOTE the Thedford Public Library Board. 1 NOTE Mr. and Mrs. Rae lived to celebrate their golden wedding on July 30, 1905. 1 NOTE The great occasion was marred only by the fact that their seven children had 1 NOTE made new homes in the West, and were unable to attend. In their time the 1 NOTE couple had seen amazing changes in Bosanquet, in Lambton County, and in 1 NOTE Canada. Rae died at Sarnia on March 25, 1912, at the age of 86. 1 NOTE From the Forest Standard, March 26, 1908:------------------------ 1 NOTE Robert Rae, visited his brother-in-law, Wm. Keith 2 CONT Howden 1 NOTE St. Paul's Church, Wisbeach was established in 1856 and was situated in the 2 CONT Town of Wisbeach on the highest point of land between London and Sarnia. 2 CONT (Although Wisbeach never acquired the status of a town, early documents reveal 2 CONT that at this time it was referred to in this manner. 1 NOTE This settlement was survey by Mr, A. Bay, Deputy Provincial Engineer, who was 2 CONT working under Mr. Peter Carroll, Chief Engineer, conducting the survey of 2 CONT Warwick Township which was completed in 1832. These records are in the Lambton 2 CONT Registry Office.) The road on which Wisbeach is located was the main trail 2 CONT through the bush between London and other eastern localities and the area 2 CONT around Sarnia and Lake Huron. It connected with the Egremont Road at Warwick 2 CONT Village which led directly to Errol, a community which was a short distance 2 CONT northeast of Sarnia on the shores of Lake Huron . 1 NOTE By 1832 the first settlers had begun to move into this area through the efforts 2 CONT of Sir John Colborne, Governor-General of the province of Upper Canada. A 2 CONT number of these civilians were of Irish and Scottish descent mixed with a 2 CONT considerable number of English soldiers who, after serving in Britain's armies 2 CONT throughout her vast colonies, were retired with a small pension and given a 2 CONT land grant in a new world to encourage fast colonization of England's new 2 CONT possessions. 1 NOTE As a great number of these settlers were English they were members of the 2 CONT Church of England and as they were financially unable to construct and maintain 2 CONT a House of Worship they arranged to hold church services in the homes of their 2 CONT neighbours. Their religious needs were generally provided by itinerant 2 CONT clergymen who travelled from one community to another, either on foot or on 2 CONT horseback. 1 NOTE Research indicates that in these very early years these local communities were 2 CONT administered from the extensive Diocese of Quebec in Lower Canada, and that 2 CONT Bishop Stewart of that diocese visited this area in his ministerial and 2 CONT parochial duties to the province of Upper Canada prior to 1839. At this time, 2 CONT the church Society of the Diocese of Toronto was formed out of the rather large 2 CONT Diocese of Quebec, and Bishop Strachan was appointed as its first bishop. By 2 CONT virtue of his office Bishop Strachan made periodic visits to the new churches 2 CONT in this expanding part of Upper Canada. (Rev. John Strachan was an influential 2 CONT clergyman and had become a member of the executive council of the government in 2 CONT 1815. He was a most prominent figure in the Church of England and at the same 2 CONT time a very skilled statesman directing the policy of the ruling class during 2 CONT the adminstration of the Earl of Dalhousie - Governor General.) 1 NOTE The very first church to be established in this area was the Parish of St. 2 CONT Ann's, Adelaide, in 1833, with Rev. Dominic Blake as its first rector. This 2 CONT same rector served the community of Wisbeach, six miles to the west of St. 2 CONT Ann's, conducting services in the homes of the residents until 1844. 1 NOTE When Rev. Arthur Mortimer become the second resident rector of St. Ann's, he 2 CONT too continued to serve the settlers in the Wisbeach area visiting in the 2 CONT various homes, holding family worship and providing the people with an 2 CONT opportunity to receive the Holy Orders of the Church when required. 1 NOTE St. Mary's Church, Warwick, was founded in 1834 and Rev. John Radcliffe was 2 CONT appointed the first rector, serving the parishioners in that area until 1845, 2 CONT when Rev. Dr. Mockridge was appointed to the parish, and he ministered to the 2 CONT members, conducting services there until 1858. 1 NOTE According to reliable information he also started to visit the settlers at 2 CONT Wisbeach and credit can be given to him and Rev. Arthur Mortimer of St. Ann's, 2 CONT Adelaide, for being instrumental in forming the new parish of St. Paul's 2 CONT Church, Wisbeach, in 1856, because by now the settlement had reached the point 2 CONT where the people felt they could support a church of their own and create their 2 CONT own destiny. 1 NOTE It was evident that since St. Ann's was already part of a four point parish 2 CONT with Strathroy, Napier and Katesville, the new Church of St. Paul's should be 2 CONT associated with St. Mary's, Warwick, a partnership that has endured until the 2 CONT present. 1 NOTE One of the first settlers in the community of Wisbeach was Capt. Harry Alison 2 CONT (b.1774) of Her Majesty Queen Victoria's 90th Light Infantry, who, with his 2 CONT wife and family took up a land grant from the crown in 1834, consisting of 600 2 CONT acres in lots 28, 29 and 30 on Concession 1, NER in Warwick 2 CONT Township................ 1 NOTE ................At this time it may be interesting to recall the names of other 2 CONT settlers who followed him and who professed in the faith of the Church of 2 CONT England by their attendance at services: 1 NOTE Henry Bearss Wildridge Moore 1 NOTE William Bryson James McIntosh, Sr. 1 NOTE William Cleverdon William Philips 1 NOTE Thomas Chambers Frederick Rothwell 1 NOTE Joseph Hawken George Smith 1 NOTE Henry Healy Samuel Smith 1 NOTE Samuel Howden John Shaw 1 NOTE John Howden Thomas Southorn 1 NOTE Francis Iles Charles Tanner 1 NOTE Christopher Iles Edwin Tanner 1 NOTE Eusebius McGillicuddy Thomas C. Gibson. It is not definitely known, 2 CONT but from reliable infromation available, the building for the new church was 2 CONT constructed within that year and the first service was held in January 2 CONT 1857...................... 1 NOTE ......................Due to a diminshing number of church members in later 2 CONT years, it became necessary to close the church for regular services, but with 2 CONT the concurrence of the Synod of Huron it was designated as a chapel and 2 CONT provisions were made that a memorial service for the cemetary and church be 2 CONT held the first Sunday in June of each year. 1 NOTE .................. 1 NOTE !BIRTH: Wisbeach Cemetary; ; St Paul's Church, Wisbeach, Lambton, Ontario; ; , 2 CONT NS038483 1 NOTE Source Media Type: Tombstone 1 NOTE !DEATH: Wisbeach Cemetary; ; St Paul's Church, Wisbeach, Lambton, Ontario; ; , 2 CONT NS038483 1 NOTE Source Media Type: Tombstone 0 @I40@ INDI 1 NAME Harold Smith /Howden/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 4 OCT 1908 2 PLAC Wisbeach,Warwick,Lambton,ON 1 DEAT 2 DATE 27 JUL 1984 1 REFN 40 1 FAMS @F44@ 1 FAMC @F33@ 1 NOTE !BIRTH: Wisbeach Cemetary; ; St Paul's Church, Wisbeach, Lambton, Ontario; ; , 2 CONT NS038483 1 NOTE Source Media Type: Tombstone 0 @I41@ INDI 1 NAME Marjorie Wilma /Howden/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1 SEP 1911 2 PLAC Wisbeach,Lambton,ON 1 DEAT 2 DATE 15 JUL 1992 2 PLAC Sarnia,Ont. 1 REFN 41 1 FAMS @F45@ 1 FAMC @F33@ 1 RESI 2 PLAC Sarnia,Ont. at time of passing away. 1 NOTE Peacfully at Sarnia General Hospital on Wednesday, July 15, 1992, MARJORIE 2 CONT WILMA (HOWDEN) MONKHOUSE of Sarnia, formerly of Forest and Thedford in her 81st 2 CONT year.
