He was to be named Robert Norman Smith, however he was registered as Norman Robert Smith. His birth registration says he was born at SW Section 10, Township 24, Range 26, W 2, Saskatchewan. This would be where they lived on the farm. His military enrollment form lists his place of birth as Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Canada. The nearest post office was Imperial, Saskatchewan according to his birth registration.

Was a veteran of World War 2 and saw action in Germany, where he was wounded. He was with the Highland Light Infantry(Voluntary Service 1939) from Galt, Ontario, Canada, and was in the second wave in the landing of Normandy. According to communication from Lorne H. Wilson, this Infantry Regiment "was part of the 9th Candian Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, which made up part of the Canadian assault forces that day, and continued throughout the rest of the war. The Canadian Regiment from Hamilton was The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, which was in the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, which did not take part in the initial assualt landing".

From Wikipedia:

The Highland Light Infantry regiment participated in the D-Day landings, disembarking at Nan sector on Juno Beach on June 6, 1944 with the rest of the 9th Brigade, which consisted of the The Highland Light Infantry, the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, and the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. These regiments were not in the first wave assault, but landed later in the morning and advanced through the lead brigades. [1] The 9th Brigade belonged to the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division.
Robert said that when he came onto the beach in the second wave, he came upon bodies of soldiers from the French-Canadian Le Régiment de la Chaudière, which mobilized a standard rifle battalion in 1939, who were in support of Queen's Own Rifles militia regiment of Toronto.

The farm was bought from Howard Monkhouse, who bought it from Jonathon Starkey. Jonathon Starkey ran a dairy operation here when he owned the farm. Robert Doan owned this farm before Jonathon Starkey. It is not known if Jonathon Starkey bought this farm from Robert Doan.
It was a mixed farm operation until the mid 1970's. Then a cereal crop operation until 1990. Rented the land out to a neighbour in 1991. As of November 1997, Robert and Maxine still on the farm. In the spring of 1998 they sold the farm to Peter Van Englen, a neighbour.
